Caribbean Carnival was born out of resistance. During slavery, European colonizers held lavish masquerade balls that enslaved Africans were forbidden to attend. Following Emancipation, freed communities took to the streets in J'ouvert and masquerade, mocking colonial rulers, reclaiming their humanity, and celebrating freedom through their own traditions, music, and dance.
